Sturm Hockey Performance
About Lucas Sturm
Head coach and owner
I help hockey players improve their speed, explosiveness, and on-ice performance through structured, individualized training.
Lucas Sturm is the founder of Sturm Hockey Performance. He grew up playing competitive hockey in the Chicago area, developing through the Chicago Mission and Chicago Young Americans AAA programs.
He continued his career through juniors, receiving a tender from the Chippewa Steel (NAHL) and playing in the NCDC before moving on to college hockey. Lucas played at Indiana Tech before transferring to Northern Illinois University, where he served as a captain of the ACHA Division 1 team.
Lucas’s goal is to create an environment where players not only improve physically, but also build confidence, discipline, and a deeper understanding of their game. Every session is designed to challenge players, hold them to a high standard, and help them develop habits that carry beyond training. Whether a player is looking to gain an edge for the next season or take a serious step forward in their development, SHP is built for those who are committed to improving. His approach is also grounded in his Christian faith, which shapes the values he brings to coaching—discipline, humility, accountability, and consistent effort
The SHP Philosophy
At Sturm Hockey Performance (SHP), training is built around a structured development process that prioritizes individual attention, repetition, and detailed feedback.
Team practices and games play an important role in systems, conditioning, and team play. However, they often limit the amount of direct instruction and puck touches each player receives. With many athletes on the ice at once, coaching feedback and repetitions are naturally divided across the group.
SHP sessions are designed differently. Training is built around smaller groups or one-on-one sessions so that players can move through a focused development process that are catered to each Player.
The SHP process
1.Develop Player profile
Identify strengths, weaknesses, and limiting factors
Understand position-specific demands and player goals
Establish baseline metrics to track progress over time
2. Targeted skill work
Build a personalized training plan based on each player’s evaluation
Coach every rep with real-time adjustments to improve mechanics and efficiency
Emphasize high-quality repetitions to create lasting movement patterns
3. Game transfer
Translate training improvements directly into on-ice performance
Reinforce movement patterns that carry into real game situations
